Library & Media Center
The Library Media Center (LMC) has a collection of over 12,000 books.  It also has 15 computers for student use.  The LMC subscribes to over 40 magazines, which may be read in the LMC only; they do not circulate. There is a special, comfortable Graphic Novels section.  The LMC is staffed by a Teacher Librarian, a part-time Library Clerk, Student Service Workers, and Library Practice students who learn valuable skills while helping the LMC to function.  The LMC’s doors are open at 7:30 a.m. and close one half hour after the student day ends, usually at 3:30 p.m.

Students may check out up to three books at a time, using their Carnegie ID as their Library Card.  Books are checked out for two weeks at a time, except reference books, which do not circulate, Fines are 10 cents a day, with a $10 limit.  Lost or damaged books are the responsibility of the student who checks them out per LAUSD Board rule.  Most books cost from $20 to $40 to replace. Books are returned in either the book drop in the LMC, or the outside book drop when the LMC is closed.  Eighth grade students who fail to pay their debts and return books are banned from culmination activities including parties, dances, and walking the stage.

Students may use the LMC before or after school, and at nutrition and lunch.  During nutrition and lunch, A Carnegie ID is required.  During class time, students may come with their class, or up to six students with Teacher-issued LMC Passes.  Teachers schedule in advance, collaborating on their lesson(s) with the teacher librarian.  No gum, food, or drink is allowed at any time, whether the container is opened or closed; such items will be confiscated and discarded.

Students and staff are encouraged to make recommendations for book purchases and magazine subscriptions.  Back issues of magazines are available for taking from the FREE MAGAZINE bin.  There are also a self-serve copier (10 cents).  Book club order forms are always available from the BOOK CLUBS bin.

Computers are used for school-related purposes only: reading, reference, research, and circulation.  They are not for personal email, games, chat rooms, fan sites, music videos, or other non-educational purposes.  The three computers on the aisle are for iBistro, the District’s card catalog program, used for searching our collection for books.  Printouts are free, bur excessive use will cost 10 cents per page.
